Journalist Roxanne McCarty-O'Kane challenges women to have confidence.

Opinion

Hey gorgeous!

Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane asks, when was the last time you looked in the mirror and gave yourself a compliment?

When was the last time you looked in the mirror, gave yourself a little nod and a wink and said, with a completely straight face, ‘Hey there gorgeous’?

This was the question posed to a room full of confident businesswomen at an event I attended last month and to be honest, the thought of doing such a thing made me break out into a cold sweat.

And I know I wasn’t alone in having a physical recoil at the very thought of doing that.

Once I recovered, I got thinking – when was the last time I did that?

It was waaaay before I had my two gorgeous children. Possibly on the morning of my wedding, when I had my hair and make-up done up to the nines and looked like no real semblance of my everyday self.

If I dial back even further, the last time I regularly gave myself a ‘how you doin’?’ was probably when I was in my early twenties and I was pumped while primping and preening in the bathroom in the lead-up to heading out on the town with my girlfriends for a night of dancing.

So, now that I’ve shared, when was the last time you gave yourself a bit of an emotional boost?

If it was this morning, give yourself a pat on the back. But I’m guessing the majority of you would have let out a nervous giggle when you started to let your mind wander to the last time you gave yourself a bit of appreciation.

It’s true that we are all busier than ever and many of us are juggling multiple balls – work, relationships with family and friends, trying to fit in some leisure time to enjoy the things that we love – but we often forget to look after number one.

Eating well and getting in some form of exercise (even if it is chasing your preschooler around and around the kitchen island bench every morning trying to get some pants on them for the day…) are key to filling up your cup and keeping you energised.

But I have a different challenge for those of you reading this. Take some time to check yourself out in the mirror and really appreciate what you see.

Yes, it may be confronting at first, but you are one-of-a-kind and taking that time to acknowledge how gorgeous you are will help you to find a new spring in your step when you come to find a new self-love and appreciation for who you are. Go on, give it a try.
